Kerry's "Letter from Australia" - October 2007This month has been quite quiet on the Starr front. Lauren has recovered from her car accident; she suffered with headaches for several weeks, despite my pleas to see a doctor falling on deaf ears. When she did eventually go, he said her brain was bruised and gave her anti inflammatory drugs, which brought down the swelling and stopped the headaches. She has also won another half marathon and a 10KM race, so has earned herself some more money. Holly started school holidays at the end of September and immediately went off on a weekend tour with her dance group, literally finished school at 2.30pm and was on the coach at 3.30pm and off down to the coast. She had great fun; they even did an impromptu dance on the pavement of town they were performing in, to drum up some extra "bums on seats" for the show. It was Fathers Day out here this month and Kevin chose to go out for a slap up breakfast rather than dinner, as there is a place in town that does a "Full Monty". He said it is one of the best breakfasts he has had, which for a man who has spent his life on building sites and has tried out his fair share of cafes is praise indeed. Holly made him a card at school. Lauren had already sent a card a few months back, when it was Fathers day in South Africa, so he got to celebrate twice this year. Kevins' friend who was hit by the car is doing a lot better now, he had his house assessed for home visits (just overnight at the weekends) but he needed a ramp to access the house as it is on a slope and some modifications internally to allow free running of the wheelchair. So Kevin has been over there building the ramp and moving things in the house and he came home for the first time at the end of September. It has made such a difference to get that break from the hospital routine and enjoy some family time. He is hoping that after a couple more scans have been arranged he will be able to get around on crutches. It all depends on how his arm has healed and obviously his spine. The website has been jogging along nicely, the adverts came out in a couple of magazines this month which has caused an increase in volume, although it is still early days and I won't be retiring on my fortune any day soon. I laughed out loud the other day whilst traveling into town, the "Good Life Farm" near us, which Holly's school visited once a week last term, has a permanent sign out on the road side saying they have "organic pig manure for sale", this has obviously not had the desired effect so with typical Aussie bluntness the sign has now been replaced with "Buy our shit" (sic)... short, not so sweet but definitely to the point!!!!!! That is all for this month, so with best wishes to you and yours, I bid you goodbye. Love Kerry |
